Supermodel Naomi Campbell is being lined up to replace Cheryl Cole as a judge on The X Factor.

Show bosses want the 40-year-old model to join the programme if Ms Cole decides to leave for a job on Simon Cowell’s new American version of the series.

Miss Campbell would be one of two new faces to join the panel, alongside returning judges Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh, when the next series airs in August.

The Mail on Sunday understands ITV and production company talkbackThames are also looking for a male star with a global reach on the same scale as Miss Campbell to help shore up the panel, amid fears that the departure of Cole and Cowell will send ratings into freefall.

Channel executives are increasingly afraid that former Girls Aloud singer Ms Cole will be crossing the Atlantic along with Cowell to work on his US version of The X Factor.

Miss Campbell is seen as being of the calibre of celebrity needed to inject new glamour and maintain peak ratings.

The Streatham-born model has struck up an unlikely friendship with music mogul Cowell in recent years. She was spotted backstage at the X Factor studios in Wembley, North London, last year, where she revealed she is an avid viewer of the Saturday night series and spoke of her ‘love’ for the 51-year-old X Factor boss.

She said: ‘Simon is an institution. I love him. I watch The X Factor every week and it drives my boyfriend insane. I’m torn about who I want to win.’

Miss Campbell, who is dating Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin, was one of 400 guests at Cowell’s £1 million star-studded 50th birthday party in 2009.

However, critics of Miss Campbell will wonder how much authority she could bring to The X Factor, given her lack of success in the music industry. In 1995 she released her debut album as a singer, Baby Woman, which peaked at 75 in the UK charts despite an appearance on BBC 1’s Top Of The Pops to promote the first single from the record, Love And Tears.

She has also made minor appearances on tracks by American rapper Vanilla Ice and legendary US record producer Quincy Jones.

Her music video credits include playing the love interest to Michael Jackson in his 1991 song In The Closet, and lip-synching alongside fellow super¬models Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington in Freedom!, George Michael’s 1990 single.

ITV executives hope charity ambassador Ms Campbell will also add a new dimension by advising contestants on dealing with life in the public eye, but eyebrows will be raised at the suggestion of her providing guidance, given her notorious temper.

In 2000 the model pleaded guilty in a Toronto court to assault on a personal assistant, and in 2006 she was found guilty of assaulting her housekeeper in New York. In 2008 she was sentenced to 200 hours’ community service for assaulting a police officer at Heathrow after an item of her luggage was lost.

ITV is keen to maintain The X Factor’s position as one of the most popular programmes on TV.

It has been among the three most-watched TV shows for the past four years, reaching a peak when 18 million watched Matt Cardle crowned winner in December.

Those ratings helped the channel earn more than £75 million from the sale of advertising slots during last year’s series.

An X Factor spokeswoman said: ‘No decisions have been made at this stage.’

A spokesman for Ms Campbell declined to comment.

February has been good to Eminem. The 38-year-old Detroit native took won Best Rap Album at the Grammys on Feb. 13, and now he's surpassed Lady Gaga on Facebook and hit 1 billion views on YouTube.

"Within the last few hours Eminem has become the world's most popular living person on Facebook," reads a Feb. 24 statement by social media tracker Famecount. Founder Daniel Dearlove says Eminem's online fame has skyrocketed in the past six months.

Eminem currently boasts 28.88 million Facebook fans, while Gaga falls slightly behind with 28.87 million; she spent eight months as the most "Liked" Facebook celeb, according to Famecount. A Michael Jackson page tops both stars with 29.13 million fans.

Meanwhile, Eminem joined the rarified air of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber as the third star to notch 1 billion music video streams on YouTube.

"This new landmark follows a spectacular year for Eminem, with the release of 'Recovery' and wins at the Grammys matched by surging social media fame," writes Daniel Dearlove at Famecount. "Although Eminem cannot afford complacency; Lady Gaga knows how to command attention and the release of 'Born this Way' puts her back in the spotlight. Meanwhile Rihanna is one to watch -- currently the fastest growing star on Facebook."

Rihanna is third in the ranks of living Facebook celebrities and the next in line to hit 1 billion YouTube views.

Twitter Alert: Wold Cup fever hits celebrities

The ICC World Cup 2011 has started and cricket fever is rampant across South Asia. Both Pakistanis and Indians are excited but when it comes to their celebrities, Bollywood seems way more hopeful and enthusiastic about the Indian cricket team compared to Pakistani celebrities.
It was India’s first match against Bangladesh on February 19 and the stars used Twitter to motivate their team, promoting a positive sentiment among the fans.
When it came to Pakistan’s first match against Kenya on Wednesday, most of our celebrities hardly had anything to talk about the win, let alone the match.
Ali Zafar, who used to be obsessed with cricket – updating every hour in his past tweets, this time just sent one update at the end of the match. Perhaps due to his booming Bollywood career? But what happened to Imran Khan, whose Twitter page remained silent on Pakistan’s major cricket match?
Then there are celebrities like Junoon’s Salman Ahmad who continued a live tweet-commentary during the match on Wednesday, impressing his fans who thought he did a better job than the professional commentators.

Starstruck Author to Speak at 2011 Literary Luncheon

Elizabeth Currid-Halkett will present her latest book, Starstruck: The Business of Celebrity, at the 2011 Literary Luncheon hosted by the Friends of the USC Libraries in Doheny Memorial Library on March 10.
Currid-Halkett, assistant professor at the USC School of Policy, Planning, and Development, joins the ranks of other renowned authors who previously have spoken as part of the series, including Michael Cunningham, Robin D. G. Kelley, M.G. Lord, Lisa See, University Professor Kevin Starr, Robin Swicord, Ayelet Waldman and Essie Mae Washington.
Published by Faber & Faber, Starstruck quantifies the business of fame by examining celebrity photographs taken by the Getty Images wire service from 2006 to 2007. The book also explores society’s obsession with celebrity, explaining why society anoints some as stars but not others and detailing the business implications that entails.
“Dr. Currid’s work is an excellent example of SPPD’s capacity to bridge theory and practice,” said Jack H. Knott, the C. Erwin and Ione L. Piper Dean of SPPD. “Her book is both academically outstanding and relevant in the world at large. “We appreciate the enormous academic contributions she makes to our school and to our students, and are thrilled that her book is so successful.”
Starstruck has received wide coverage by more than 20 leading media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, New York Daily News, New York magazine, New York Post, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Philadelphia Examiner, Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday UK, Daily Beast, Huffington Post, Salon, Fox News, KPPC, WNYC and Radio New Zealand.

Paper magazine wrote: “Never before has so much statistical analysis been brought to bear on the likes of Britney Spears, Clint Eastwood and Lara Flynn Boyle and the subtle but meaningful differences between A-, B- and C-list celebrities.”

TIMES may be hard, but Brits are determined to carry on cruising.
More than a million and a half of us regularly take to the seas for our holidays, and according to cruise giants Carnival, that number will double over the next ten years.
With the top companies adding new ships to their fleets to keep up with demand, thousands of exciting jobs on ships sailing to exotic locations are just over the horizon.
Providing customers with an ever-greater range of luxuries helps companies bring in more business. Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, has its own Central Park, an American-style boardwalk and a miniature golf course.
As the number of on-board amenities grows, so too does the number of staff needed to operate them, meaning more jobs – many of them in surprising areas.
More than 2,800 people from 80 countries work on the Allure of the Seas. But they’re not all waiters and cleaners – there are also horticulturalists, art auctioneers, photographers, technicians and divers.
WHAT ARE THE JOBS?
Roles are usually divided into two areas: there are staff who deal with passengers – labelled hotel and entertainment – and marine and technical workers who operate the ship.
Hotel jobs include everything from housekeeping and working in the kitchens, to serving in shops and staffing spas and gyms.
Entertainers such as dancers, singers and ice skaters also fall into this category, as do the medical teams.
The purser’s department covers a range of administrative roles on the ship, with duties including allocating cabins, manning reception areas, handling finances and organising trips.
The technical side includes the deck, engine and electrical departments, which between them take care of ship safety, navigation and maintenance.

Though some cruise companies invite people to contact them by email, most of the biggest, which hire people from all over the world, do not employ the majority of their staff directly, and instead use a network of local hiring partners.
The Excellent Entertainment Agency, www.excellententertainment.biz, works with Disney Cruise Lines to recruit for a plethora of positions, including entertainment technicians, life guards, counsellors and activities staff. Its sister company, The Excellent Hospitality Agency – found at www.excellenthospitality.biz – employs cooks, chefs, waiters, concierges and merchandise hosts.
The company says it will be interviewing people in late April and early May for jobs starting in the summer, adding that anyone interested in applying should get in touch now.

EARN AND LEARN
Cruise companies also offer a first step into a long-term career through cadetship schemes.
These allow young people to use a combination of study at a nautical college and working on board a ship to gain a qualification such as a Higher National Diploma or a Foundation Degree, plus a very important professional qualification known as a Certificate of Competency as Officer of the Watch, which is recognised by the industry.
Carnival UK, for example, offers three different cadetship schemes.
Deck cadets learn all about the safe navigation of the ship, maintaining the deck and supervising the enormous number of crew members employed on board.
Engine cadets make sure the ship’s heart works properly and are tasked with maintenance and the repair of anything that goes wrong.
Electrotechnical cadets, as the name suggests, look after the vessel’s electro-technical equipment, including the electricity generating plant, all bridge navigational equipment and the ship’s entertainment systems.

THE internet propelled Justin Bieber to megastardom and made him the world’s biggest teen – worth £100million at just 16.
Women love him and female celebrities flock to him...but now his extraordinary success is turning him from heart-throb to heartbreaker.
Despite fans’ hate campaign against it, he is currently stepping out with Disney beauty Selena Gomez.
But at the star-studded London premiere of his new film Never Say Never last week she was nowhere to be seen, preferring to stay at home in the US. Now worried friends fear she’s heading for heartache.

As Justin goes from one awards ceremony to another, pretty brunette Selena is no doubt watching with an anxious eye. Their romance – the worst-kept secret in showbiz – was established beyond doubt when they were spotted strolling hand in hand in Santa Monica then enjoying an intimate break in St Lucia last month.

Justin, wearing just a pair of shorts, was snapped tenderly kissing a bikini-clad Selena and patting her on the bottom.
During a recent interview, the singer opened his laptop to reveal his screensaver – a romantic sunset shot of them together. And last week for Valentine’s he was spotted in lingerie store Victoria’s Secret, where he spent thousands of pounds.Justin has been reluctant to confirm the romance, saying: “I don’t think it’s really anyone’s business what my private life is. Some things you just have to keep to yourself.” But he did reveal: “I don’t think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them.”
Selena also denied that they were dating.
“Oh my gosh. Justin is one of my best friends,” she claimed. “That’s all it is. All innocent.”
Justin did, though, give away a few clues as to what is really going on: “There are so many girls who would just do anything for me because of my status. Someone told me it’s great to be with somebody who has just as much to lose as you do. It’s probably a good idea if I go out with someone famous.”
It looks like Selena is that special person. A huge star in her own right, she also has the squeaky-clean Disney brand to support. But while she was a supporter of the True Love Waits chastity campaign, it’s perhaps significant that she no longer wears her purity ring – a symbol of a no-sex-before-marriage pledge.
One reason to keep the relationship under wraps is the wrath of Justin’s teenage fans – the Beliebers.
“I hate u, i want you to die,” tweeted one young fan to Selena on finding out about the romance. Another added: “I’ll kill you I swear on GOD!!!!”, “If you are the Girlfriend of Justin I will Kill you I HATE YOU :@ !!!” and the vile slur: “Stay away from Justin, I’ll kill you!”
Justin’s manager Scooter Braun is also keen that his young star is seen as single, saying: “This kid travels a lot and I always told him, ‘You shouldn’t be in a relationship unless you can give someone everything’.”
But while Justin is smitten with Selena and is said to be buying a multi-million-pound apartment in LA so he can be near her, for such a young man he already has quite a track record as a heart-breaker. The first girl linked to him was fellow singer Jacqueline Rae Pyles, who has since been dumped by his record label. Then there was first love Jasmine Villegas, also a singer, who was cast aside to make way for Gomez. He is also close to reality star Kim Kardashian, who at 30 is 14 years his senior. After one meeting, Justin posted a picture on Twitter and wrote: “Look it’s my girlfriend Kim Kardashian.”
During a magazine photo shoot on a Bahamas beach, Kim tweeted: “I messed up Justin Bieber’s hair.”
Ah, the hair... that tousled moptop is becoming almost as famous as the man himself. The style, known simply as The Bieber, is side-sweeping America, swiftly becoming the must-have style for teenage boys. Salons charge up to £80 for the helmet-like cut with long, side-brushed fringe. Some boys are too embarrassed to ask for it by name, so they describe the combed-over do with no mention of Justin.
No doubt boys copying the style are hoping it will give them some of the star’s legendary appeal to girls – which is growing as quickly as his sales figures.
And as his film Never Say Never smashes all box office records and his fortune gets ever vaster, it seems unlikely Justin will be able to stay a one-woman boy for long.
